I am a newscast producer. When I meet people for the first time and tell them my profession, many say, “Can you put me on TV?” I reply, “Yeah, if you kill somebody!”
Oftentimes people are searching for a quick route to fame and fortune. There’s nothing wrong with high hopes, but each of us has to carve out own path. Shortcuts are great, but not always easy to come by. I’ve found one of the best shortcuts is networking.
People who ask me for their chance on the evening news are on the right track but are taking the wrong approach. A better way: meet people who are already are, where you want to be in life. Then, find a common connection and build a relationship. Other races do it very well. They call it, GOLF.
Your Assignment: Find a person who can serve as mentor for you and start networking. Show them how you hustle and what you can do for them … flattery helps too. Perhaps they’ll give you a few insider tips, a job recommendation or even a hand up!
