One truism we must all learn and accept is that in business there are rules and for the majority of us there are no shortcuts around these rules. One of these rules is that success requires the entrepreneur to show initiative, competitiveness, persistence, a desire to achieve and most importantly self-confidence.
If you think we’re lying take a look at your favorite businessman, entrepreneur or corporate-hustler. You’ll probably notice they all demonstrate these traits. You may want to ask yourself how you rate in these areas.
Initiative – This simply means you have the determination to begin a project. It also means that you have the self-discipline to see a project through to its completion. You have to be a self-starter!
Competitiveness – Only the strongest will survive in today’s market. Your customers get bombarded by tons of other business each day. To get your share of the pie you have to build and maintain a competitive edge over all the others. Answer the question, "Why should someone do business with me?" This question is harder to answer than it seems, but its one of the most important you’ll encounter.
Persistence – Running into obstacles is just a part of life… It’s an even bigger part of being an entrepreneur. We all know this!!! And since we know it, we can prepare ourselves for it. When obstacles present themselves take it as an opportunity to assess your position and make adjustments as needed. The ability to work through problems and stay focused on our goals will ultimately define us as leaders and will determine our success.
Desire – This is a no-brainer. This rule has got to be in your soul – To succeed you have to really want it!
Self Confidence – Most importantly you have to believe in yourself, your idea and your ability to succeed. Others will not always be so quick to accept your ideas and vision but you must have the self confidence to keep going. There’s no way around this.
